Josh played in 10 games as a redshirt freshman at SMU and got starts against Texas State and Memphis. He blocked for an offense that threw for a school-record-tying 29 TDs and ranked 17th in the nation in passing offense that year (2008). Started every game his senior season and was awarded honorable mention All-Conference honors for the second time in his college career (first time was during his freshman season).
Josh entered the Redskins/Cowboys game on December 30, 2012 in place of LG Kory Lichtensteiger. He was praised for his solid performance. The Redskins went on to win that game, clinching the title of NFC East Champs.
